La Excelencia, an eleven-piece Salsa Dura ensemble from New York City, has been invigorating the Latin music scene since 2005. Founded by percussionists Julian Silva and Jose Vazquez-Cofresi, the band is renowned for its dynamic sound and socially conscious lyrics, addressing themes like immigration, poverty, and discrimination.

Their track “Ochun Y Chango,” from the 2020 album Machete, pays homage to two significant deities in the Yoruba religion: Ochun, the goddess of love and fertility, and Chango, the god of thunder and war. By blending these rich cultural symbols with their signature Salsa Dura sound, La Excelencia delivers a track that is both rhythmically compelling and spiritually evocative.

The official music video for “Ochun Y Chango” was filmed in Cuba, capturing the island’s vibrant landscapes and cultural essence. This visual representation not only complements the song’s thematic elements but also underscores the band’s commitment to authenticity and cultural appreciation.

Under Julian Silva’s leadership, La Excelencia has released notable albums such as Salsa Con Conciencia (2006), Mi Tumbao Social (2009), and Ecos Del Barrio (2012). Each release showcases their dedication to producing music that is both danceable and thought-provoking, resonating with audiences worldwide.

The band’s energetic live performances have further solidified their reputation, with shows that exude energy and passion. As one fan aptly noted, attending a La Excelencia concert feels akin to experiencing a rock show, a testament to their electrifying stage presence.
